Why Study Somalia?
Buried beneath the recent headlines are reports that the Horn of Africa is currently suffering the worst drought in 60 years. Accompanied by famine, mass displacement to refugee camps in neighboring states, and threats of domestic terrorism, Somalia is in turmoil. Considered a failed state by some counts, this east African country provides a compelling and sobering look at threats to statehood on the systemic and societal levels.
